The sleeping habits of the rich & famous

Beauty sleep might sound like something from a fairy-tale, but getting enough zzz’s on a night really does show. If there’s one group of people who advocate this more than anyone, it’s celebrities. They look impossibly stunning on the red carpet … so it’s no wonder we’re all desperate to discover the beauty secrets of the rich and famous. And it turns out, sleep is every bit as important as the products in your make-up bag. So instead of heading out to buy the latest concealer or must-have eyebrow pencil, take note of these VIP sleep secrets.

1. Get the hours in

We’ve all heard that getting between seven and nine hours sleep each night is what we should be aiming for. This is a recommendation that actress and singer, Jennifer Lopez, swears by. Discussing her sleeping habits, Lopez has frequently commented that she always tries to get eight hours of sleep each night, saying it’s her number one beauty secret – along with drinking plenty of water.

And if you want to take things to the extreme, fellow singer, Mariah Carey, aims for double the recommended hours and keeps her head on the pillow for up to 15 hours each day. Carey claims that it’s essential for her looks and vocal cords.

VIP Tip: While 15 hours might seem a tad excessive (and unrealistic for busy working folk), ensuring you get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night will do wonders for your physical and mental health.

2. Treat yourself to a new mattress

Celebrity power couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, reportedly spend almost $1 million on beds and mattresses when they moved into their new home. They opted for the exclusive (and extremely pricey) Savoir Beds, also favoured by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Madonna and Elton John.

Meanwhile, Hollywood royalty, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie, are rumoured to favour the handmade Hastens Vividus mattresses, which cost around $65,000, and Demi Moore and George Clooney are partial to the similarly eye-watering Kluft mattresses – which range from around $30,000 and up.

VIP Tip: Luckily, buying a mattress which feels like heaven doesn’t have to cost the earth. We design and produce a range of luxury memory foam mattresses in our UK Mattress Factory.

3. Get into a sleep routine

Getting that magic 8 hours of sleep each night is a concept that is drilled into us. But while it may be a healthy number to aim for, we all function a little differently and for some having fewer hours sleep is just perfect.

Successful businessman, Richard Branson, clocks up between 5 and 6 hours sleeps each night, while Barack Obama and Elon Musk are able to function on just 6 hours kip. Inventor of the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison, got by on only 5 hours per night.

VIP Tip: Go to sleep and get up at the same time for each day – and limit those weekend lie-ins to just 1 hour extra. The iPhone Bedtime feature is a great tool to help keep you on track.

4. Create a calm space

Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Cher, both have Moroccan-themed bedrooms to add a touch of luxury to their sleep space, while Cameron Diaz and Sarah Jessica-Parker are known to have incorporated some swanky vintage items into their rooms for a touch of style.

VIP Tip: Having a complete décor overhaul may not be realistic for all of us, but small things such as candles, twinkly fairy lights, fluffy cushions, and blankets can all contribute to creating a warm ambience that will get you in the mood for a good slumber.

5. Try out separate bedrooms

If you’re living with a partner, spending the night in separate bedrooms may sound like an odd and unconventional thing to do, but if you do have the space it could be worth giving it a try every now and again.

Former couple, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, along with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, and Kevin Jonas Danielle Deleasa, were all famous advocates of sleeping apart. Not only does it give you the chance to stretch out, but you won’t be woken up by any pesky snoring or shuffling around either.

VIP Tip: While it may not be a habit you want to fall into permanently, having the luxury of your own space can be great once in a while. Maybe make it a weekly or monthly arrangement.

Whether you live in Hollywood or Hull, a healthy sleep routine will make you look and feel like a VIP.
