Fall back in love with sleep this Valentine’s Day

Fall back in love with sleep this Valentine’s Day

It’s February….and we’re just half a fortnight’s worth of sleeps away from Valentine’s Day when Cupid’s and his mischievous arrow bring love and romance to the fore.

But Cupid aside, it would seem that we seem to have fallen out of love with sleep.  The pandemic and lockdowns, coupled with disruption to normal daily life and social isolation, have all had their impact on our sleeping habits leading to a worsening of case of insomnia.

Research from the Centre for Population Change at Southampton University, conducted after the first restrictions in March 2020, found a large increase in anxiety-related sleep problems among both men and women. Working from a 15,360 sample, the research found that worry-related sleep rose from 15.7% to 24.7%.  However, sleeplessness more than doubled for mothers of children aged 0-4 from 19.5% to 40%, attributed to the fact that they were taking more of the day to day domestic burden.

The pandemic aside, our modern lifestyles also have an impact on our ability to get a good night’s sleep - over stimulation from mobile phones, the pressures on us to stay connected with work through technology, irregular eating habits and our addiction to caffeine all play havoc when it comes to getting a restful night’s sleep.

You can check to see if you’re suffering from insomnia by doing a quick test on the NHS website but why not also revisit our blog on how to create the perfect sleep environment.  Typically, adults need 7-9 hours sleep, children 9-13 hours, and toddlers and babies 12-17 hours.

Also, wearing comfortable nightwear is important too, so check out our handy tips on what to wear in bed to ensure you don't get too hot.
