Do You Need a Memory Foam Topper Or Is It Time For a New Mattress?
For many of us, buying a new memory foam mattress isn’t a rushed decision, nor is it easy considering the choice that’s out there, or the money it costs to actually buy the new mattress. You can spend thousands of pounds on a new memory foam mattress, you can also spend a couple of hundred pounds, either way it’s still a large amount of money which you will probably need to save up for.
But then you come across a memory foam mattress topper; they’re considerably cheaper than buying a new mattress, but according to your research they are still going to give you a great night’s sleep. So there’s your dilemma; should I buy a memory foam mattress or topper? And what’s the difference? Why would you spend the money on a memory foam mattress if you can just use a mattress topper?
What’s the Difference?
A memory foam mattress topper is a layer of memory foam, usually between 2cm and 10cm deep which you place on top of your existing mattress to offer an additional layer of comfort and pressure relief. A memory foam mattress comprises of a layer of memory foam, usually between 2cm and 10cm deep, which is combined with a supportive base such as reflex foam or pocket springs, to offer a combination of comfort and support. You cannot get mattresses which are purely memory foam as you would sink too deep and would not receive the support provided by a durable and resilient base.
When Should You Use a Memory Foam Mattress Topper?
A memory foam topper is the perfect accompaniment for your mattress if it is too firm or just a little bit worn or not so fresh any more. If you have had your mattress for a few months, and you just can’t seem to get on with it then a memory foam mattress topper could make all the difference. Likewise if you’ve bought a good quality mattress, but you’ve had it a couple of years and feel like it needs freshening up, then a topper would also be a great choice in this situation and could make your mattress feel brand new!
When Should You Buy a New Mattress?
If you’re mattress is more than 7 years old, it is said to be a less healthy place to sleep, and according to The Sleep Council this is when you should consider a replacement. So firstly if your mattress is older than this, then the best advice we can give if you feel your mattress has lost its comfort and/or support, is to buy a new mattress rather than a mattress topper. If you have had your mattress for less than 7 years, but it has begun to sag or breakdown in places then we would also suggest a new memory foam mattress, as placing a memory foam topper on a sagging or damaged mattress will only hinder the benefits of the topper and may ultimately cause you pain through sleeping in a twisted position. In the longterm you will still need a new mattress.
If you’re thinking about short term savings then a memory foam topper may always seem like the obvious choice, and in many cases it is the right choice. But considering the problems that can be caused by sleeping on a sagging mattress, we have to think about the long term benefits of investing in a memory foam mattress for our sleep and health, especially if you’re due a new mattress.
