How Long Does Memory Foam Take To Bounce Back?

One of the most famous features of memory foam is its ability to mould to the shape of your body and then spring back to its original position. In fact, this unique adaptive property is what gave memory foam its name and NASA-certified reputation. But, the million-dollar question, how long does memory foam take to bounce back?

What is Memory Foam?

Memory foam is a revolutionary material that was developed by NASA for the space programme to give astronauts additional support during take-off and landing. The viscoelastic foam was developed for cushioning astronauts in space crafts, to offer extra support against the high pressure of the G-force as they rocketed into outer space.

High-density memory foam, like that used in our good-quality mattresses, was developed for use in the bedding industry because of its amazing pressure-relieving ability. Memory foam reacts with your body heat, moulding to your body shape and giving you ultimate support and comfort for a good night’s sleep.

How are Memory Foam Mattresses Made?

Memory foam is made up of polymer polyurethane, which is combined with hard-working chemicals to give it its viscosity. This is what gives it that soft, sinking feeling when you get into bed.

Memory foam moulds to your shape thanks to the polyurethane foam, which is viscoelastic, meaning it softens on contact with weight and heat. Several types of foams are used in mattresses, including reflex foam, polyurethane foam, open-cell memory foam and even gel-infused memory foam.

Upon contact with heat, memory foam softens and moulds to the shape of your body for individualised comfort and support. Then, when you get out of bed, the foam springs back to its original shape.

How Long does Memory Foam Take to Bounce Back?

It takes just seconds for memory foam to return to its original shape. When you sit or lie down on your memory foam mattress, you will notice an indentation relevant to the pressure and weight which you applied to your body. There will probably be a deeper indentation or mattress sag around your hips, for example. When you stand up or move over to a different part of the mattress, you’ll see the foam moving back to its original shape immediately.

Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

The recovery time of a memory foam mattress topper or mattress pad depends on how thick it is. If it’s a thick 10cm+ topper made of high-density memory foam, it will take slightly longer to bounce back. You’re only talking seconds/ minutes though. You’ll still see the instant movement as soon as you stand up. For a thinner mattress topper, the recovery time probably won’t take as long.

    The Benefits of Memory Foam Beds

    Memory foam has so many health benefits both physically and mentally. And all thanks to its unique adaptive, reactive and hypoallergenic properties. The advantages are as follows;

    • Reduces tossing and turning during the night
    • Eases aches and pains
    • Improves blood circulation
    • Correctly aligns your spine
    • Reduces strain on pressure points
    • Causes fewer allergic reactions
    • Good for all sleeping positions
    • Mitigates dust mites

    How to Reduce Mattress Sagging

    Have you noticed some sagging in the areas that you sleep on most? Eventually, all mattresses will sag in places and won't be bouncing back as quickly as they once were. Here are some suggestions to fix a sagging mattress;
