Certain lifestyle choices can cause or worsen snoring. Take a look at the list below and see if there are any habits which you can tweak or change:
- Overweight: Excess fat around the neck puts pressure on your throat muscles, which then struggle to hold your airways open sufficiently during the night. So hitting the gym and eating well could be the ticket to a snore-free sleep
- Alcohol relaxes your throat muscles, narrowing your airways and increasing the chance of snoring. So don’t drink regularly, and don’t drink excessively
- Sedating medications such as sleeping pills or antihistamines relax your throat muscles, much in the same way as alcohol
- Allergies are a major cause of snoring, so ensure you’re sleeping in a healthy environment. Don’t sleep with pets, regularly wash your bedding and replace your mattress every 7-8 years.
